Week five in the NFL

by T.O. on October 7th, 2007

Just five NFL games capture my attention this week, and they are all early games, so I will be able to relax by 4:00 eastern. It’s Thanksgiving here in Canada, so that just leaves me more time to eat and drink too much:

Detroit (+4) at Washington - I keep hearing how I am supposed to be so impressed with Washington, but I don’t see it. Their running game is decent, but their QB is still raw (though talented). Detroit is flawed, but solid. I don’t see Washington running away with this one, so taking four points makes sense. Pick: Detroit.

Miami (+3) at Houston - I really, really, really don’t like what the Fish are doing this year. They are in serious trouble. Houston is up and down but they are promising and they will ultimately prove to be a better team than they have ever been. This will be a good place to show their improvement. Pick: Houston.

Atlanta (+9) at Tennessee - I think that this is a case of the public getting out of control. Tennessee is good, but not this good. Atlanta is bad, but not this bad. Joey Harrington is actually playing surprisingly well. I think Atlanta stands a very good chance of staying within this spread. Pick: Atlanta.

Jets (+3.5) at Giants - I don’t trust the Giants at all. The public is on them too much after last week’s sacks, but that was a mirage. That being said, I think that they are a better team than the flawed Jets by a wide margin, and I will take them here. Pick: Giants

Jacksonville (-1) at Kansas City - The Jags are a good team that have had a week off to prepare for a team that is, at best, not quite average. That makes it easy. Pick: Jags

UPDATE: It was a very dull weekend of NFL football despite some betting success. The Jags came through as I hoped, the Giants covered thanks to a startling collapse by a really bad Jets team, Atlanta held tight despite a terrible performance by Joey Harrington (that’s what I get for saying nice things about him), and Houston pushed thanks to a robot kicker. That left me at 3-1-1.The loss came from an irredeemably disgusting performance by the Lions (who I will never bet on again this year).
