As I said on Friday, I am not particularly thrilled with the NFL these days. Finding value this week was a mind-numbing challenge. There are so many games that are automatic passes, and a couple of the interesting games have lines that are pretty tight. I only found three games this week that I will be taking a piece of. Five games strike my fancy today. The New England game is not one of them, but I will obviously be watching with interest. My feeling is that this is the game where the Pats get back into spread covering form. I don’t particularly believe in the Steelers, especially on the road. I don’t have enough faith in that particular conviction to bet on it, though. Here are the five:

There are more NFL games this weekend than we have seen since before the bye weeks started, yet there are only three that strike my fancy. I am intrigued by Buffalo and their mountain of points at home, but I can’t convince myself to pull the trigger on it.
New York Giants (-3) at Detroit – I know I said I was done with betting on the Lions, but I just can’t quit them. I don’t trust the Giants at all, and Detroit has been great at home, So the value lies in the Lions and the points. Pick: Detroit.

There is one bet tonight that absolutely can’t lose when it comes to football: Find something else to do – absolutely anything else – instead of watching San Francisco visit Seattle. The Seahawks are pretty bad, and they will likely be playing without Shaun Alexander and Deion Branch. The Niners are pretty much terrible. I’m playing an abnormally high number of NFL games this week (8) because I am feeling post-Breeders’ Cup withdrawal, so the action will help me shake the blues.
Indianapolis (-6.5) at Carolina – I am concerned by the injury situations of both Marvin Harrison and Tony Ugoh. Despite that, Indy’s defense is healthy, and that makes the Panthers an automatic bet-against in my book thanks to the Vinny Testaverde factor. You can not get ready for a team like in as little time as Vinny has had, and I don’t care how Disney-like his story has been. Pick: Indy.
