Before I make my Super Bowl pick I want to go through the exercise of looking at the teams one at a time and considering the ways that they could win the game. Yesterday it was the Patriots, and today it is the Giants. I should say up front that I am confident that the Patriots are going to win. New York Giants (+7) at Green Bay – I’ve burned money two weekends in a row by betting against the Giants. Why stop now? I don’t believe in this team despite their recent playoff run, and I am not confident that their pass rush will be able to shut down an opposing quarterback three weeks in a row. With the spread where it is I wouldn’t at all be surprised to have my money refunded for a push, but I still think that the value lies with the better team playing at home. Pick: Green Bay.

San Diego (+10) at Indianapolis – The Chargers are cocky, they are playing as well as they have all year, there is a good chance the Antonio Gates will be back, and they already beat Indy once this year. It seems to me like there is a decent chance that San Diego can stay within 10. The Colts should win, but it won’t be easy and I’ll happily take the points. Pick: San Diego.

There may be more, but as of Friday night these are the NFL games I will be paying speciall attention to:

Philadelphia (+2.5) at Washington – Neither of these teams are playing particularly well right now. The difference, I think, is that Washington has the chance to rebound and make the playoffs, while this has the stench of a lost season for Philadelphia. Washington has played better at home than on the road, and they are back in front of their faithful after a couple of weeks away. Given the reasonable spread, the value is on the Redskins. Pick: Washington.

Giants (-4.5) at Atlanta – This is a particularly interesting game to evaluate because it seems a bit too good to be true. The Giants looked rough early last week against the Jets, but they came back nicely to deliver their third straight solid win. Atlanta looked terrible last week in a loss to Tennessee which came a week after a win against Houston that gave team observers a bit of hope. The veterans on the team are speaking out against the new coach, and the offensive line is full of injuries, forcing two youngsters to start against the fierce …read more
