The weekend is all about getting ready for the NFL and watching some college basketball (I’m excited about Ohio State-Tennessee and USC-UCLA, and I can’t wait to see what Minnesota can manage at home against Michigan State), but there are some other worthy diversions to pass the time until kickoff. UFC 80 is on tonight, but the lineup doesn’t present a lot of value in my mind. Instead, I’ll look at an older combat sport – boxing. A fight from another decade happens tonight as Roy Jones Jr. takes on Felix Trinidad. Despite the fact that both guys are over the hill and well down the other side this could be a good fight, or at least an interesting one.

Jones has an edge in size and punching power and is the deserved favorite. I think, though that the enthusiasm for him (-335) is out of hand. Trinidad will need a break or two to win the fight, but I am willing to bet that he can manage that given that I can do it at +265.

On the same card I think that the intriguing up-and-comer Mike Mollo is worth a look at -200 against washed up has-been Andrew Golota. I would also love to be on Roman Karmazin because he likely won’t break a sweat against Alex Bunema, but at -1800 I’m not even going to think about touching it.

UPDATE: Wow, that was not a good night. I guess that’s why I don’t bet on boxing often. Trinidad didn’t have enough in the tank to keep up with Jones despite a fast start. Andrew Golota showed way more than I thought he had when he won depsite not being able to see for much of the latter half of the match. The only saving grace of the night is that I let the big price on Karmazin scare me off because he got upset in a truly shocking result.
