Why I love sports

Why I love sports

Why do I love sports? I have the deadly combination of a short attention span and an insatiable curiosity, and nothing is better than sports at providing an endless supply of stories to keep me interested, inspired and excited. Need proof? This is just from the last week, and it only scratches the surface:
A – Antonio Gates. San Diego beat Tennessee relatively easily once they decided to actually try, but it was a costly victory. Tight end Gates was injured, and in the replay it looks like his toe was folded  over like origami. That’s really gotta sting, and it …read more

This is a column I do every week for Doc’s Sports. You can, and should, check them out at docsports.com for all sorts of information, insights and picks. I do a lot of writing for them.
A – Avalanche. Colorado will have to do something for the next eight to 12 weeks that they haven’t had to do for quite a while – play without their captain. After three straight injury-free seasons, Joe Sakic is out for a long stretch after opting to get surgery on a hernia that wouldn’t heal. Colorado’s mired in a tight playoff race, so the loss …read more

A – Alonzo Mourning. It’s been a rough ride for Mourning for the last several years, and he certainly didn’t deserve to go out like this. A knee injury suffered this week likely ended his season, which almost certainly means the end of his career. It would have been a real treat to see what Mourning could have done if he had been able to stay healthy. He and Grant Hill are the captains of the all-regret team.
B – Bill Parcells. I know that the common theme in the media is that the return of the legend is the …read more

A – Atlanta Falcons. Bobby Petrino is obviously the worst kind of scum, but his treachery doesn’t excuse the deep disappointment I feel about the Falcons today. The way the players were talking after Petrino left I thought that their pride would lead them to try their best to show their former coach up, but they didn’t even bother to show up as they got …read more

A – Alex Legion. This freshman is the poster boy for all that is wrong with college basketball. After initially signing with Michigan he left that program with the change in coaches, but not before waffling enough to mess up recruiting badly. In the end he headed to Kentucky. Now he has left the Wildcats. His mother seems to have been integral to the decision …read more

A – ACC. The ACC crushed the Big Ten in the challenge between the two leagues. Again. The ACC won eight of the 11 games – only Indiana, Penn State, and Michigan State were victorious from the Big Ten. Some of the results were surprisingly emphatic – Duke beat Wisconsin badly, and North Carolina had little trouble with Ohio State despite playing without Ty Lawson. …read more

A – Agent Zero. The Wizards suffered a gigantic loss this week. Gilbert Arenas, for my money probably one of the top five players in the league when it’s crunch time, will miss the next three months of action. He underwent not one but two knee operations on Wednesday. It’s the same knee that he had repaired last year, so this has to scare the …read more

A – Amazing. They may not be the best team in the league, but no one has consistently delivered thrills and memorable endings this year like the Cleveland Browns. They threw away a 27-14 lead, looked dead before kicking a tying field goal with no time left on the clock, and then won in overtime with a truly bizarre field goal. It’s not always pretty, …read more
