Bowling for Dollars – GMAC Bowl

Bowling for Dollars – GMAC Bowl

This is part of our Bowling for Dollars contest. You can start participating at any time. Check out the announcement here.
Tulsa (-4) vs. Bowling Green (Sunday, Jan. 6, 8:00 p.m. ET) – I don’t know why I am bothering to pick this game because no one is going to watch it. that’s too bad, because this could be a somewhat interesting game. Both teams can score. I think I like Tulsa’s chances of scoring more, though. That’s important because neither team has any defense to speak of, so this should be a bit of a shootout. Pick: Tulsa.

Another ugly Thursday night

Another ugly Thursday night

Maybe I am just turning into an old coot, but I find this Thursday night to be as frustratingly bad as last week. Denver and Houston does not make for an intriguing game. At all. I guess I like Denver, but neither team has a consistent offense or consistency anywhere else. Another NFL game not worth watching or betting on. Is it just me, or has that been a bit of a trend this year?
College basketball does precious little to offer a respite – there are only two games with a line. Davidson, the best 3-5 team in college basketball …read more

Tuesday night basketball

Tuesday night basketball

It’s time to get back to some college basketball here on this site. It is a pretty light card for Tuesday night, but I nonetheless find two games interesting. It’s a bit of a unique night for me because I like the visitors in both cases:
Bradley (-1.5) at Wright State – Wright State is getting a lot of credit because they beat Butler last time out. They deserve some, but not much. They won, but Butler shot absolutely horribly and would win the game most days. Before that game, they had shown far less in losing to Valpo and getting …read more

Five for Friday

Five for Friday

It’s a bit of an odd night. There are some reasonably interesting things going on in several sports, but nothing too thrilling anywhere. To add some excitement, I am going to give myself a bit of a challenge, and extend it to you. I am going to start with five mythical units, bet them wherever I want, and see how I do. You regular readers (or anyone else) out there should do the same – list the games, your bets, and number of units in the comments, and we’ll see who has a better night. Only bragging rights are on …read more

Davidson meets UNC in Charlotte

Davidson meets UNC in Charlotte

Davidson (+11.5) vs. North Carolina in Charlotte – A good friend of mine is in Charlotte on business and is going to this game. He knows nothing about college basketball and could care less. That drives me crazy. In his honor I’ll make a quick pick on the game. The game is in Davidson’s backyard, they are going to be fired up to play against the top team in the country, and North Carolina will be pacing itself far more – they have bigger fish to fry this year than Davidson. This is North Carolina’s first game, while Davidson already …read more

Top Ten college basketball freshman

Top Ten college basketball freshman

Last year the story in college basketball was all about two freshmen. Greg Oden at Ohio State had the spotlight early, but was held back by an injury that limited him until Christmas. In his absence, Kevin Durant stepped up for Texas and put together one of the greatest freshmen seasons in college basketball history. Oden came on strong at the end of the year, though, leading his team to the national championship game, while the Longhorns were knocked out in the second round. Both guys moved on to the pros and left the stage to the next class of …read more

Three college basketball games that I’ll be following as I watch football today:
Brown (+13.5) at Michigan – The John Beilein era at Michigan started strong, and I expect that to continue. Michigan played with some solid tempo in their opening game, and I don’t expect Brown to be able to match it. Pick: Michigan.
Pepperdine (+9) vs. Western Michigan – I expect pretty good things for Western Michigan this year. A trip to the dance at the end of the year wouldn’t surprise me. That being said I think that this line is a bit optimistic. Pepperdine likes to run, and …read more

A basketball game to watch on a football day

A basketball game to watch on a football day

I’ll mostly be watching football today, but I will continue to get my feet wet in basketball:
William & Mary (+22.5) at Georgetown – This is the first game for both teams, and the time the programs have ever met. Georgetown wants to win it all this year, and they will be looking to make a statement to get it going. Georgetown is better at every position and, if they want to, should run away with it. I’m betting that they will want to. Pick: Georgetown.
UPDATE: As I hoped, Georgetown pulled away in the second half. Unfortunately, they waited too long …read more

The first college basketball pick of the season

The first college basketball pick of the season

We might as well wade into the season on the second day of play. If not now then when?
Maine (+1.5) versus Tennessee-Martin – Both teams lost yesterday in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic. Maine lost 44-42 to Richmond, and Tennessee Martin lost 102-71 to Memphis. Tenn-Martin is coming back from a rough season, but they carried themselves well in the opener. They scored an impressive 71 points, they had the lead well into the first half, and they were surprisingly solid. Maine lost a close game, but it was very ugly. They turned the ball over 28 times, and …read more

Hoops Fever!!!

Hoops Fever!!!

The college basketball season started very quietly last night and I couldn’t be more excited. I could take or leave the NBA, but college basketball is any entirely different thing. The games are brilliant, the number of amazing players is mind boggling, and there is a ridiculous number of games. From early November to early April college basketball is endless drama and excitement.
It’s not just all about being a fan, though. From a betting perspective, college basketball is amazing. There are games pretty much every day, so you can find action all the time. With so many games and so …read more
