Surprising public action for Sunday’s early game
I was just checking out the public action for this weekend’s football games, and frankly I was more than a little bit surprised about what is happening in the early game. For what I would imagine is the first or at worst second time this year, fewer bettors have sided with the New England Patriots than have with their opponent. As of late Thursday night, 48 percent of bets have been placed on New England, leaving 52 percent on San Diego. Given that a Super Bowl title looks pretty much inevitable after how the playoffs have shaken out, and given how shiny and impressive that 17-0 record looks, I would have guessed that there would barely be a line big enough enough to convince Joe Public to jump on the underdog. Apparently, though, two touchdowns in the magic number. It will be interesting to see if this changes much as the games get closer. Generally you would assume that the money would get dumber as kickoff draws nearer, so I would guess that New England would get much more support going forward. Clearly, though, I have been wrong before.
The other game is playing out about as you would expect – Green Bay has drawn two-thirds of the action.

Hey T.O.,
I think the money will become dumber before game time. Why is that?
