Evaluating your progress
To enjoy long term handicapping success, the single most important element is to look back on what you have done so you can replicate what you have done well, and avoid the mistakes that you have made in the past. That means that you need to keep careful records of every bet you make, and consciously take the time to look back at them – win or lose. I like to go back and evaluate every bet I make at the end of every day to see if I am happy with the decision to make it. That doesn’t mean that I am happy if I won and frustrated if I am not. Long term success is about the process, so daily evaluation lets me be sure that I am making bets based on good decisions. Often times I can spot and correct problems in this way before they become ingrained habits and expensive leaks.
I also like to look look back every couple of months to take a bigger picture view of what I have done and how it has worked. I’ve often spotted trends or come up with new ideas and approaches to try out by doing this. It is an incredibly valuable expenditure of time. I’m obviously not the only on to do this. The outstanding horse racing blog Turf Course: Heavy has an excellent post about doing exactly the same thing. He comes up with some good insights into his own performance, and it’s well worth checking out even if you don’t play the ponies yourself. For what it’s worth, I’ve always struggled with betting on English Channel, too.
