Thursday Night Football

Thursday Night Football

If you had told me at the beginning of the year that the biggest game of the year in the NFC would be Green Bay and Dallas I would have gently suggested that you find a way to get off the drugs. Regardless, that’s what it is, and it shapes up to be a great game. For once, I am in a television advantage in Canada – for some reason I get the NFL Network when millions down south don’t, and even if I didn’t it’s on regular cable here, too. That doesn’t make up for our inability to get …read more

The Green Monkey

The Green Monkey

If you don’t know the story of The Green Monkey, you should. He sold last year as a two year old for a ridiculous $16 million. He finally got to the track late this summer after more than a year of delays. He should have stayed in the barn. In three races he has burned a lot of money up as solid favorite each time because he has yet to be competitive. Here’s a good write-up of the situation and all its ridiculousness.

Evaluating your progress

Evaluating your progress

To enjoy long term handicapping success, the single most important element is to look back on what you have done so you can replicate what you have done well, and avoid the mistakes that you have made in the past. That means that you need to keep careful records of every bet you make, and consciously take the time to look back at them – win or lose. I like to go back and evaluate every bet I make at the end of every day to see if I am happy with the decision to make it. That doesn’t mean …read more

The week in betting, A to Z

The week in betting, A to Z

This is a column I do every week for Doc’s Sports. You can, and should, check them out at docsports.com for all sorts of information, insights and picks. I do a lot of writing for them.
A – Agent Zero. The Wizards suffered a gigantic loss this week. Gilbert Arenas, for my money probably one of the top five players in the league when it’s crunch time, will miss the next three months of action. He underwent not one but two knee operations on Wednesday. It’s the same knee that he had repaired last year, so this has to scare the …read more

Why not?

Why not?

It is totally and utterly ridiculous that there is a 24 point spread in the NFL. Even more ridiculous, I can’t come up with a good reason to think that it is anything other than a legitimate spread. Don’t get me wrong – it’s a number that has been very inflated by the public support. I just don’t see how the Eagles can be competitive, so I don’t how how you could justify backing them. I normally would stay away from something this huge and silly, but I’ve had a winning weekend in the NFL already, and a loss here …read more

Sunday football

Sunday football

It’s not a very interesting weekend to me on the football front. The Thursday games were boring, but they represented most of the weekend’s value in my mind. Only one NFL game captures my interest. Don’t worry, though – I have another game for you to look at, too.
Houston (+3) at Cleveland – Cleveland has won four in a row at home. Houston has won two straight, but I’m not convinced that they are for real. They’ve matched up situationally well the last two games, and I am not confident that they will again here. This game opened with a …read more

The biggest of big games

The biggest of big games

Not much is exciting me about today’s college schedule, so I am going to take a pass on the day. That doesn’t mean I’m not excited about something, though – the Kansas-Missouri game tonight is everything that is great about college football.
Thanks to LSU’s loss yesterday, this is the second straight year where we have a huge rivalry game to end the year with the number one ranking on the line for the winner. Kansas is the de facto number one already, and there is a good chance that Missouri would take the top spot with a convincing win. To …read more

Friday college action

Friday college action

You Americans have the best holidays. Thursday’s full of NFL action, and then a full slate of college football on Fridays. A bunch of great college basketball tournament play to boot. And big freaking balloons invading Broadway. Life is good.
Three college football games intrigue me on Friday:
Central Michigan (-2.5) at Akron – The Akron offense has been struggling for the most part recently. Central Michigan never seems to falter offensively against teams of this caliber. I’ll take the explosive offense to win by less than a field goal. Pick: Central Michigan
Texas (-6) at Texas A&M – Texas has an outside …read more

A more interesting Thursday night game

A more interesting Thursday night game

What a horrendously boring day of football this has been so far. Two games and two totally predictable mismatches. Tonight’s NFL offering doesn’t promise to be any better, either. Thankfully, the college ranks are providing an intriguing game:
USC (-3) at Arizona State – I think that it’s a bit of an insult that ASU is a home dog in this game given how the seasons have gone. More importantly, I think that ASU will view it as an insult. They are an explosive team who suddenly has the Pac-10 championship in their grasp despite their loss to Oregon. They will …read more

Thanksgiving day games

Thanksgiving day games

Happy Thanksgiving to all you Americans out there. I’m a Canadian, so it’s not my Thanksgiving, but I work mostly for Americans, I will be lying on the couch watching football all day like most Americans, and I really, really love turkey, so there will be a bird in the oven at my house in the spirit of cross-border cooperation. It’s the least I can do.
The fun of watching the game will obviously be enhanced by having betting interests in them. I normally wouldn’t play all three of the NFL games, but then I wouldn’t normally spend a Thursday lying …read more
