Who I like in the NFL – Week Four
Despite the bizarre happenings that have been commonplace in the first few weeks of the season, there has been enough low hanging fruit to pick that it’s been a profitable start to the season. Here’s the games I will be looking at to try to keep the winning going:
Green Bay (-1) at Minnesota - I am as surprised as anyone by the start that the Packers have had, but I think that this is a place that they can keep up their winning ways. Minnesota’s quarterbacking situation is a mess, and they are a long way away from being a good team. Green Bay may not win by much, but this spread is too nice to ignore. The Packers are the pick.
Detroit (+3) vs. Chicago – The Lions are at home, and they are facing a team that is breaking in a new quarterback, an offense that has struggled in all aspects, and a defense that has been absolutely ravaged by injuries. The Lions’ offense, if it is in form, should be able to find holes in that defense and score enough to cover this spread.
Houston (-2.5) at Atlanta – I’m not going to blindly damn Atlanta all year, but I think that this is a good spot for Houston. Joey Harrington will be starting, but his already challenged confidence will be further hurt by the signing of Byron Leftwich. Houston is playing well. They are hungry, and they will find a way to win here.
Tampa Bay (+3) at Carolina – I really like what Tampa Bay has been doing this year. They are in a good spot here at this price. Carolina has struggled, and the Bucs will either face an injured Jake Delhomme or a rusty David Carr. Either way I like the chances of Jeff Garcia and the Bucs.
New York Jets (-3.5) at Buffalo – I am only lukewarm about the Jets in general, but I am willing to back them against Buffalo and a rookie QB, Trent Edwards, who is being called into duty for his first start well before he ideally would have been.
UPDATE: Green Bay, Detroit and Tampa Bay came through for me, while the Jets struggled and Houston had a disastrous showing. 3-2 is enough to make me happy.
